Karen Agustiawan Biography

Karen Agustiawan is the president and CEO of Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas company. Forbes ranked her first on its list of Asia's 50 Power Businesswomen in 2011. Agustiawan was born in 1958 in Bandung, West Java. She is the daughter of R. Asiah and Dr. Sumiyatno, the former president of the Biofarma pharmaceutical company and the first Indonesian envoy to the World Health Organization. She earned a degree in engineering physics from the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1983. She had planned to become a teacher, but at the urging of her father, she changed her mind and chose to pursue a career in business. After graduation, she went to work for Mobil as a quality controller for seismic drilling projects. She later worked as a project manager in the Exploration Computing Department of the company. She left Mobil in 1998 to work for Landmark Concurrent Solusi, the Indonesian branch of Landmark Graphics Corporation. Agustiawan was promoted to project manager of oil and gas accounts in 2002 as a result of Landmark's merger with Halliburton. She became the first woman to lead Pertamina's upstream division in 2006. She was appointed CEO and president of the company in February 2009, making her the first female to hold the position.
