Kara McCollough Biography

Former Miss USA 2017, Kara McCollough is a scientist in nuclear energy regulation, founder of Science Exploration for Kids, and a girl’s basketball coach. She is a full-time optimist who lives by the quote, “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence!” Kara uses her platform to share her personal life experiences and motivates her audience with speeches about having a growth mindset. Kara has been interested with science and its impact on our everyday lives for a very long time. As a child, one of her earliest memories was of her ransacking a Naval base tower’s basement in Japan, where she stumbled on a science kit that had been disposed of. As a result of this, she became very passionate about science and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with a concentration in Radiochemistry from South Carolina State University; and this provided her with the opportunities to intern at many universities, which prepared her for her current career as a scientist for the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. She founded “Science Exploration for Kids” (SE4K) – An organization dedicated to enhancing the science and math experience for students by incorporating the arts into STEM = STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). Through travel workshops, after-school programs, and career readiness, SE4K creates “Fun-with-Purpose” activities for every grade level which aids students in cultivating a passion for all STEAM subjects.
