Justin Massa Biography

Justin Massa is a food, big data, housing, open government data, and civil rights innovator and entrepreneur. His work focuses on connecting industries, businesses, and governments that have historically lagged behind in terms of the technologies and data required to leapfrog ahead. He currently works as a Portfolio Director at IDEO, a global design, innovation, and consulting firm. Justin was previously the founder and President of Food Genius, a venture-backed big data and analytics company in the food industry with clients such as US Foods, McDonald's, Safeway, Coca-Cola, and Kraft. Food Genius was named to Entrepreneur Magazine's list of "100 Brilliant Companies" and received a Chicago Innovation "Up and Comer" Award as well as a Core77 Design Award. US Foods purchased Food Genius in April 2016. Prior to joining Food Genius, Justin worked as the Director of Project and Grant Development at the Metro Chicago Information Center (MCIC) and as the co-founder and executive director of MoveSmart.org, a non-profit that connected housing seekers to communities of opportunity and diversity. Justin founded the Apps for Metro Chicago competition while at MCIC, which was one of the first civic data competitions. Justin is a regular tv and print media commentator, having appeared on NPR's Morning Edition, Newsweek, The Washington Post, and Inc. He has been named to Crain's Chicago Business Tech50 (2012) and Chicago's Food & Drink 50 (2012) lists (2013). The Community Renewal Society named him one of Chicago's "35 Under 35" emerging civil rights leaders in 2009.
