Julie Barlow & Jean-Benoit Nadeau Biography

Jean-Benoît Nadeau and Julie Barlow, life and writing partners, live, work, and raise their kids in Canada's two official languages and two founding cultures. They have jointly and separately published six books in French and English in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France. They have over 1,000 magazine and newspaper articles to their credit, as well as 40 journalism and literary awards, including National Magazine Awards and a Fulbright Scholarship. Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong, Nadeau and Barlow's first book, explains how the French think and organise themselves – from their penchant for centralization to their love of street protests and five-course meals. The book has sold 200,000 copies to date in 5 languages. It is popular among Francophiles in North America, Europe and Asia and used in university courses on French culture in the U.S.Nadeau and Barlow’s second book, The Story of French (St. Martin’s Press, 2006), is a popular history of the French language that explains how French speakers across the planet think about their language. The New York Times praised The Story of French as “a highly accessible history of the French language.” The Montreal Gazette called it “a mind-altering experience.” Translated into French and Japanese, The Story of French won the 2007 Mavis Gallant Award for Nonfiction. Nadeau and Barlow spoke about France and the French language at over 80 conferences and events across Canada, the United States, Europe, and Japan. They have written about France and French for Canadian, American, and European newspapers and magazines, including The New York Times, L'Express and the Courier International, The International Herald Tribune, and The Toronto Star. They write for the Quebec public affairs magazine L'actualité. From 1999 to 2001, the couple lived in France while Nadeau was a fellow at the Institute for Current World Affairs. They lived in Phoenix, Arizona in 2010 while Barlow was a Fulbright Scholar at Arizona State University. They also resided in Toronto and travelled extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and New Zealand. Nadeau and Barlow, who are trilingual in English, French, and Spanish, are now based in Montreal, where they live with their twin daughters. They are currently working on new books in Spanish and Arabic. Yet Another Mind. The authors offer advice on learning another language based on their personal experiences. They respond to questions such as, "What do we gain from learning another language?" Why is it such an old-fashioned gift for yourself or your children? Why is it that you are never too young or too old to learn a new language? Bilingualism. The British Council predicted a bleak future for unilingual English speakers a decade ago. Bilingual, or even trilingual, people benefit from globalisation. The best language for doing business is the client's language! Consider China, Mexico, and Afghanistan, but also Europe, with whom Canada is negotiating a trade agreement. French is a good place to start for Canadians, whose dual national tongues are also the world's most international languages. This presentation explains what you get out of learning a new language. "Language is the roadmap of a culture," writes American writer Rita Mae Brown. The Other Global Language is French.Beginning with some spectacular facts and figures, the authors explain how French became a global language and why it is still influential today. They demonstrate how French has continues to remain a dynamic creative force as well as a language of culture, ideas, business, diplomacy, and science by drawing comparisons with other great international languages. They also describe how French speakers perceive themselves, their language, and the world. Is that French? This presentation explains how French evolved into its current form, or forms, because the majority of the presentation explains the stunning variations of French over time and distance, demonstrating that there has never been a uniform French. Do You Speak Francophone? Francophones, Anglophones, and Cellularphones: Do You Speak Francophone? The authors begin their presentation by clarifying how a simple word that did not exist fifty years ago, francophone, has caused a sea change in the worldview of French speakers, as well as changed their perception of Canada. From there, they explain the values that all French speakers share. The French Riddles, France has its own way of dealing with issues, from the veil to labour riots and globalisation. The authors describe how France deals with modernity while maintaining its identity and values. This is a one-of-a-kind reflection on how France continues to matter. What is it about the French that makes them so French?/br> This presentation answers many questions unanswered about the French, such as their fascination with great ideas, their alleged arrogance, their love of food, and their alleged hedonism. The authors connect the dots between French customs and French society, explaining how the French created a society that serves as a model in many ways.
