Julian Gewirtz is an American diplomat, historian, and poet. He formerly served as Senior Director for China and Taiwan Affairs at the White House National Security Council (NSC) in the Biden administration, having previously held the positions of Deputy Coordinator for Global China Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and Director for China at the NSC. Gewirtz earned a B.A. from Harvard College and a Ph.D. in modern Chinese history from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.
His books include “Unlikely Partners: Chinese Reformers, Western Economists, and the Making of Global China” (2017) and “Never Turn Back: China and the Forbidden History of the 1980s” (2022), which explore China’s economic reforms and intellectual debates. His poetry, published in AGNI and The Nation, often engages historical themes.
