Julian Brave NoiseCat is a Canadian-American writer, filmmaker, and activist, an enrolled member of the Canim Lake Band Tsq’escen of the Secwepemc Nation and a descendant of the Lil’Wat Nation. Raised in Oakland, California, by his non-Native mother, he studied history at Columbia University and earned a graduate degree from Oxford.
NoiseCat’s debut documentary, “Sugarcane” (2024), co-directed with Emily Kassie, investigates abuse at a residential school tied to his family, earning a Sundance Directing Award and an Oscar nomination. His forthcoming book, “We Survived the Night" (2025), blends memoir, journalism, and Indigenous history.
