Jonwayne first appeared on the LA music scene in 2008-09, when the east LA club Low End Theory was appearing as the centre of a new generation of hip-hop beat creators, including Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, Gaslamp Killer, Daedelus, and Kutmah. Jonwayne hopped in with handmade rap soundtracks, fresh out of high school, and immersed himself in the scene.
It felt like a golden age to him, and he found it very empowering. He rose to prominence as a producer, generating the instrumental album Bowser (2011) – but it was his instruction of the mic that attracted the attention of Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf, who agreed to sign him to record an album as an Master of ceremony.
