Jonathan Roberts realized he wanted to become a ballroom dancer after he watched the popular film Scent of a Woman. The popular tango scene in the movie compelled Roberts to leave behind what could have been the start of a promising career in basketball.
Roberts used the movie ticket to avail of free ballroom dancing lessons and from there has gone on to dance professionally in several competitions. In 1997 he and his first partner gained the title USA Rising Star American Ballroom Dancing Champions but thereafter decided to switch to Latin dancing. He is married to his current partner Anna Trebunskaya.
