He is most recognized for his portrayal as Uncle Rico in the film Napoleon Dynamite and as Laslo Hollyfeld in the 1985 comedy picture Real Genius. Gries also appeared in the horror/comedy sequel Fright Night II as a werewolf henchman. Broots on the NBC series The Pretender is his most well-known television role.
He is the son of Emmy-winning writer, director, and producer Tom Gries. He is a vegetarian, and while he chewed some of the steaks his character Uncle Rico consumes in Napoleon Dynamite, he refused to swallow them.
