Mr. Gnarr, born Jon Gunnar Kristinsson in Reykjavik to a police officer and a kitchen worker, was not a model child. At the age of 11, he decided that school was pointless for his future as a circus clown or pirate, and he refused to learn any further.
He dropped out of school at the age of 13 and joined Reykjavik's punk scene. He was sent to a boarding school for troubled teenagers when he was 14 and stayed until he was 16, when he dropped out for good.
