Jon Fussell was born in the Panama Canal Zone, the son of a United States Army Green Beret doctor, which is one of four United States Navy SEALs in his family. He enrolled in the Navy after graduating from Old Dominion University in 1994, where he was the leader of his Division One wrestling team.
He finished BUD/s (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training) as well as worked on SEAL Team Four as a Sniper and Tactical Communicator. He was chosen for Officer Candidate School in 1999, received his commission, and was brought back to the SEAL Teams as an officer.
