Rivers' music has a distinct southern flavor to it. He was born in New York City on November 7, 1942, and his family relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, when he was five years old. His father was John's initial musical influence. My father and uncle used to get together and play mandolin and guitar while singing ancient Italian folk tunes.
