Benson was introduced to racing by his father, John Sr., the owner of Benson Speed Equipment. Johnny began his racing career on dirt when John Sr. withdrew from the competition in 1981. He began his career at Thunderbird Speedway, where he won rookie of the year in 1982.
In 1986, he began racing on asphalt at Berlin Raceway, where his father had achieved fame. Johnny carried on the legacy by winning the Late Model Championship in 1989. Johnny set a new record by winning 10 of the 15 events he entered.
