John Dower emeritus teacher of Japanese history resigned from the History staff in 2010 yet stays dynamic in MIT's internet Visualizing Cultures venture a spearheading site he helped to establish in 2002 that kicks off something new in the insightful utilization of visual materials to reconsider the experience of Japan and China in the cutting edge world. Starting at 2012, eleven of the extensive introductions on this multi-unit site were created by him. Books by Professor Dower incorporate The Elements of Japanese Design Origins of the Modern Japanese State: Selected Writings of E. H. Norman Empire and Aftermath: Yoshida Shigeru and the Japanese Experience 1876-1945 A Century of Japanese Photography The Hiroshima Murals: The Art of Iri Maruki and Toshi Maruki War Without Mercy: Race and Power in the Pacific War Japan in War and Peace: Selected Essays Embracing Defeat: Japan in the Wake of World War II Cultures of War: Pearl Harbor/Hiroshima/9-11/Iraq and Ways of Forgetting Ways of Remembering: Japan in the Modern World. War Without Mercy won a few prizes in the United States and Japan including the National Book Critics Circle Award. Grants for Embracing Defeat incorporate the Pulitzer Prize (for general verifiable) National Book Award (for true to life) Bancroft Prize (for U.S. history) Fairbanks Prize (for the historical backdrop of Asia) Los Angeles Times Book Prize (ever) and two lofty Japanese prizes for the narrative variant of its work. Dower was the official maker of the Academy Award-assigned narrative. He has instructed at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of California-San Diego. He has been an individual of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1991 and was regarded with the American Historical Association's Award for Scholarly Distinction in 2013."
