At the London School of Economics, John Michael Van Reenen is a lecturer in the Department of Economics as well as the director of the Centre for Economic Performance. He is the son of Lionel Van Reenen, University of London, a veteran sociologist at Goldsmiths College, and a South African foreigner. Anne Van Reenen, a retired banker, is his mother.

He is married to Sarah Chambers, an interior decorator at Carden Cunietti in London. Van Reenen received the Yrjö Jahnsson Prize in 2009 (along with Fabrizio Zilibotti). This is Europe's answer to the John Clark Bates Medal. The European Economic Affiliation bestows it on Europe's best economics expert below the age of forty-five.
