John U. Bacon is an American journalist, author, and sports commentator. A native of Ann Arbor, he went on to earn a degree from the University of Michigan. He began his career at The Ann Arbor News, later becoming a sports feature writer for The Detroit News, where he covered the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano.

Now a freelance writer, he’s contributed to The New York Times, Time, and ESPN The Magazine. Bacon has authored 13 books, seven of which are national bestsellers, including “Three and Out” (2011), “Fourth and Long” (2013), and “Let Them Lead” (2021), which draws leadership lessons from coaching Ann Arbor Huron High School’s hockey team from worst to best.
