Spencer was born in Paterson, New Jersey (although some sources indicate New York City) and raised in Totowa, New Jersey, as the son of blue-collar parents, an Irish American father, and a Ukrainian-American mother.
At the age of 16, he enrolled at the Professional Children's School in Manhattan, where he shared courses with Liza Minnelli and violinist Pinchas Zukerman, among others. Later, he went to Fairleigh Dickinson University but did not finish his studies.
