Shook learned about lean management while working for Toyota in Japan and the United States for nearly 11 years, assisting in the transfer of production, engineering, and management systems from Japan to New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI), and then to other operations around the world. He became Toyota's first American manager in Japan while working at the company's headquarters.
