John Ousterhout graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in physics in 1975 and a doctorate in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1980. I was a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1980 to 1994.
The Magic layout editor and the Crystal timing analyzer were among the integrated circuit design tools I worked on, as were the Sprite network operating system, log-structured file systems, the Tcl scripting language, and the Tk toolkit. In 1994, I left Berkeley to pursue a long-held ambition of developing commercial software.
