Moody was born in the city of Pittsburgh in the state of Pennsylvania. He graduated from Cornell University in 1975 and began working for United Press International, where he rose through the ranks to become the Moscow and Paris bureau chiefs.
Following that, he worked for Time, first as a Vatican journalist and Rome bureau head, then as the Latin American bureau chief from 1986, and lastly as the New York bureau chief. As the head of the New York bureau, Moody was opposed to Time/1996 Warner's acquisition of Turner Broadcasting.
