Born in Danville, KY, near Lexington in 1965, John Michael Montgomery was part of the '90s wave of honky tonk hitmakers. He learned to play the guitar from his father who was a local musician. At age 5 he performed in public with his father's band with his mother playing the drums.
He was performing regularly by age 15 on the local scene and became the lead singer of a group formed with his father and brother after his parents divorced at 17.
