He was born in Blackpool, England, to Irish and Scottish Catholic parents, but grew up in Withington, Manchester, and went to St. Joseph's College in Blackpool for his education. During World War II, many expectant mothers were evacuated to locations like Blackpool, and many Mancunians were born outside the city.
He originally found acting at the Stretford Youth Theatre, where he sold peanuts at Manchester United football matches (despite reports that he favors Manchester City). As a young man, he immigrated to the United States after his elder sister, Vera, a war bride from rural Illinois, decided to sponsor him.
