In June 1988, while riding his bike near his hometown for fitness training, John Maclean was hit by an 8-tonne truck. The impact caused multiple fractures in John's pelvis and back, a fragmented sternum, punctured lungs, a broken arm, and rendered John paraplegic.
Despite the grief of what he had lost, the excruciating physical pain, and the obstacles of daily life in a wheelchair, John resolved to become bigger and stronger than ever. He set about proving himself in the world's most difficult sporting events.
