John W. Limbert was designated Distinguished Professor of International Affairs at the U.S. Maritime Academy in August 2006 following a 33-year profession in the United States Foreign Service. He was President of the American Foreign Service Association (2003-05) and Ambassador to Mauritania (2000-03).

Diplomat Limbert holds the Department of State's most elevated honor - the Distinguished Service Award- - and the Award for Valor which he got in 1981 following fourteen months as a prisoner in Iran. He has a Ph.D. from Harvard University in history and Middle Eastern examinations and has instructed in Iranian secondary schools and at the University of Shiraz.
