In 1952 and 1953, he earned the Maxwell Award, as well as the Heisman Trophy in 1953. The Pittsburgh Steelers picked Lattner in the first round in 1954, but he only stayed with them for one season before joining the US Air Force.
During a football game there, he received a catastrophic knee injury that precluded him from ever playing professional football again. In Oak Park, Illinois, Johhny Lattner attended Fenwick High School. He now resides in Oak Park.
