John Kirby is a retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral and communications expert. He served as White House National Security Communications Advisor from 2022 to 2025, coordinating inter-agency policy explanations. Previously, he was the Pentagon Press Secretary (2021–2022) and Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs under the Biden administration.
During the Obama administration, he was the Pentagon Press Secretary (2013–2015), the State Department Spokesperson (2015–2017), and the Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs. A St. Petersburg, Florida native, Kirby graduated from the University of South Florida with a B.A. in History, earning master’s degrees from Troy State University and the Naval War College.
