On May 2, 2011, at Oulton Park, John Hopkins became the first American to win a British Superbike Series race. John Hopkins, a prominent World Superbike and MotoGP motorcycle racer who began his career racing dirt bikes in southern California as a child, is one of the sport's more colourful characters.

Hopkins began his professional road racing career in 1999, and his first wins came the following year in the AMA 750 SuperSport class (Daytona, Georgia and Laguna Seca). Hopkins advanced to the AMA's new Formula Xtreme class in 2001, where he won two races (Georgia and Loudon, N.H.).
