Goodman was acting in a 1987 phase creation of Antony and Cleopatra in Los Angeles when an ABC headhunter spotted him and selected him for a job on another TV sitcom. The show Roseanne featuring humorist Roseanne Barr concentrated on the good and bad times of an industrial Midwestern family.
Goodman was picked to play the joyful extreme adoring dad and the foil to Barr's job as the mocking sharp-witted mother. The satire was a short-term hit and turned into a profession making move for Goodman. He was designated for an Emmy multiple times from 1989 to 1995 and earned a Best Actor Golden Globe Award in 1993.
