From 1983 to 1984, Bunting was a member of the Philadelphia Stars of the United States Football League. Bunting entered the coaching ranks after retiring from the NFL. He worked as an assistant coach for three NFL clubs, including Kansas City, St. Louis, and New Orleans. He was the head defensive coach for the Saint Louis Rams in 2000, and he was instrumental in the team's Super Bowl win.
