He is a former NFL player and former head football coach at the University of North Carolina. He was a linebacker with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1972 to 1982, and he was a part of the team's Super Bowl victory over the Oakland Raiders in 1981.

From 1983 to 1984, Bunting was a member of the Philadelphia Stars of the United States Football League. Bunting entered the coaching ranks after retiring from the NFL. He worked as an assistant coach for three NFL clubs, including Kansas City, St. Louis, and New Orleans.
