Richardson was conceived in London to a showy family the little girl of entertainer Vanessa Redgrave and executive Tony Richardson the granddaughter of Sir Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson Lady Redgrave. Her sister was the late on-screen character Natasha Richardson (1963-2009) and through her, she was the sister-in-law of on-screen character Liam Neeson.
She is the niece of Lynn Redgrave and Corin Redgrave and cousin of entertainer Jemma Redgrave who is only five days more youthful than Richardson. Joely Richardson showed up as an extra at three years old in the 1968 adaptation of The Charge of the Light Brigade coordinated by her dad.
