Joel D. Wallach Biography

Dr. Joel Wallach was born and reared in Missouri and got his bachelor's degree in agriculture science from the University of Missouri. He worked as a research veterinary pathologist at The National Institute of Health's Center for the Biology of Natural Systems, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri; and Emory University's Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He discovered and identified the first animal models for cystic fibrosis, monkeys, and realized that because their disease was caused by a nutritional deficit, he could replicate it at will. His discovery held enormous hope for children with the illness, but when he made it public, he was sacked on short notice by the institute. Dr. Wallach, frustrated and bewildered, decided to attend medical school so that he could treat children with cystic fibrosis personally. He accepted an opportunity to teach nutrition at The National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Oregon, despite not understanding what a naturopathic doctor was. He enrolled as a full-time student while learning that he could be a primary care physician, deliver babies, stitch up chainsaw cuts, write prescriptions, and be reimbursed by insurance, all via a program that fostered an interest in nutrition. People began to throng to the campus clinic. Doctor Wallach's fresh perspective stems from his veterinary medical expertise. Because there is no health insurance, animal products like meat and dairy are kept inexpensive by using nutritious formulae in animal feed to prevent and cure illnesses.
