Joe Lacob Biography

Joe Lacob is the co-managing member of the Golden State Warriors ownership group in his capacity as Co-Executive Chairman and CEO. In addition, he is a member of the NBA Board of Governors. Lacob has almost two decades of NBA and professional sports experience, including a five-year stint as a minority owner of the Boston Celtics, where he sat on the basketball committee. With the historic organization, he acquired an NBA World Championship ring before selling his minority share and launching an NBA record-setting offer to buy his local NBA team — a longstanding ambition of the Atherton native. Lacob has been the driving force behind many of the innovative changes that have occurred with the franchise, including numerous noteworthy personnel additions and an emphasis on openness, since acquiring the Warriors and taking ownership of the club on November 12, 2010. During his first full offseason as owner, he brought in two of the most experienced, successful, and respected figures in NBA circles, including NBA Hall of Famer and basketball legend Jerry West as an executive board member and longtime league and team executive Rick Welts as president and chief operating officer. Furthermore, Lacob was instrumental in the appointment of Mark Jackson as head coach and successful sports agent Bob Myers as deputy general manager/vice president of basketball operations. Lacob answers questions from fans via the Owners' Box feature on the team's website and often performs in-studio interviews with local radio and TV stations in an effort to interact directly with the team's supporters and open the lines of communication. He addressed approximately 3,000 of the team's Season Ticket Holders at an exclusive event at Oracle Arena in September. Since 1987, Lacob has been a partner with Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in Menlo Park, California. He is still an active partner in the company, but he has stepped down as a managing partner to pursue his lifelong dream of owning and controlling an NBA franchise. He has led investments in over 50 start-up businesses spanning several areas, including life sciences and medical technology, the internet, and energy, in his capacity as a venture investor. Prior to joining Kleiner Perkins, Lacob worked for Cetus Corporation, FHP International, a health maintenance organization, and Booz, Allen & Hamilton, a management consulting firm. Lacob graduated from the University of California-Irvine with a bachelor's degree in biological sciences, a master's degree in public health (epidemiology) from UCLA, and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business. He attributes his master's degree in Epidemiology (biostatistics) to give him a statistical grounding that fueled his love of sports. It also influenced his choice to invest in Sportsline, one of the first sports websites and one of Lacob's first sporting successes. He was also a founder and early investor of the American Basketball League, a professional women's basketball league that was later surpassed by the WNBA. Lacob was also one of the founding partners in the Pebble Beach Company, which was created to re-establish long-term American ownership of the famous Pebble Beach resort and golf course. In addition, Lacob has been a fan of Stanford basketball for almost 25 years and is a regular in his Maples Pavilion courtside seats. Lacob presently serves on the boards of directors of Align Technology, as well as Autonomic Technologies, Neuropace, Ophthonix, Therox, SunDrop Fuels, and TransMedics, among other privately owned firms. Lacob has been active in industry groups such as the American Heart Association and the AHA Roundtable in recent years. He has also been highly involved at Stanford University, serving on the Medical Center, Business School, and Athletic Department advisory boards. Lacob's charitable activities are centered on education, both locally and at institutions. He has also given scholarships to a number of deserving high school and college students with excellent academic and athletic promise. Joe is an enthusiastic golfer who has competed in the AT&T National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach for many years. For almost 30 years, he has participated in a weekly pick-up basketball game at Stanford, and he still does, and he occasionally joins Warrior's workers in pick-up games at the team's facilities. Most significantly for Warriors fans, Lacob has been a die-hard supporter of the team he currently owns in the Bay Area since 1998, has been a Season Ticket Holder since 1998.
