During high school, he was a member of a rock band, then a gospel quartet, and finally, a bluegrass band called the Special Edition during college. Over the following five years, he worked in a foundry while honing his songwriting and vocal skills, and his Love on the Rocks was recorded by Hank Thompson, which gave him a break.
Diffie traveled to Nashville in 1986, confident that he had a chance in the music business when Randy Travis nearly recorded another of his tunes. While continuing to create songs, he got a job at the Gibson guitar manufacturing and became a popular demo singer.
