Joe Diffie Biography

During high school, he was a member of a rock band, then a gospel quartet, and finally, a bluegrass band called the Special Edition during college. Over the following five years, he worked in a foundry while honing his songwriting and vocal skills, and his Love on the Rocks was recorded by Hank Thompson, which gave him a break. Diffie traveled to Nashville in 1986, confident that he had a chance in the music business when Randy Travis nearly recorded another of his tunes. While continuing to create songs, he got a job at the Gibson guitar manufacturing and became a popular demo singer. There Goes My Heart Again, a Diffie duet recorded by Holly Dunn in 1989, was a tremendous hit, and Diffie found himself in high demand. In 1990, he signed with Epic Records and released A Thousand Winding Roads, his debut album. Home, his debut song, reached number one on the country charts, and If the Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets) followed suit; two other singles from the album, If You Want Me Too and New Way (To Light Up An Old Flame), also reached number two. Diffie continued to be a hitmaker throughout the rest of the 1990s, and he struck again with his sophomore album, Regular Joe, released in 1992; Is It Cold in Here and Ships That Don't Come In both charted in the Top 5. Diffie, who was known for his ballads at the time, changed things up with Honky Tonk Attitude in 1993, which emphasized his rowdy, rocking side and sense of humor, and proved to be his best-selling album to date. John Deere Green, Prop Me Up Next to the Jukebox (If I Die), and the title single all charted in the Top Five. Diffie gained two number ones with the title single and Pickup Man, as well as a Top Fiver with So Help Me, Girl, on his highly popular follow-up, Third Rock From the Sun, released in 1994. Mr. Christmas, a holiday album, was released in 1995, as was Life's So Funny, which earned Diffie his sixth number one hit in Bigger than the Beatles. Including the release of Twice Upon a Time in 1997, Diffie's commercial momentum began to wane, but Epic released a Greatest Hits collection the following year, with a new song, Texas Sized Heartache, that catapulted him back into the Top Five. A Night to Remember, released in 1999, was Diffie's most straight-ahead, conventional country record to date, and it yielded two Top Ten singles in the title track and It's Always Somethin'. For 2001's In Another World, he was transferred to Sony's relaunched Monument division, and the album's title tune reached the Top Ten early the following year.
