Joseph DeRisi is a molecular scientist and biochemist who is looking for the genetic causes of disease. His research at UCSF is centered on the causes of malaria, but he's also interested in SARS, avian flu, and other emerging illnesses.
One of the attributes that helped him obtain a MacArthur genius award in 2004 was his methodology, which blends scientific precision with a nerd's boundary-breaking excitement for new approaches. DeRisi, a self-described computer geek, invented and programmed the ViroChip, a DNA microarray that tests for the presence of all known viruses in one step.
