In the 1970s, as Handsome Jimmy Valiant, he joined the World Wide Wrestling Federation and created a tag team with Johnny Valiant that dominated the tag team scene for a while. Valiant signed with NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions in the early 1980s as Boogie Woogie Man Jimmy Valiant and dubbed his followers The Street People.
Paul Jones and his army of wrestlers, which included The Barbarian, Shaska, Baron Von Raschke, Teijho Khan, and Manny Fernandez, had a long feud with him. During the years-long dispute, Valiant, Jones, and Whatley all got their heads shaved.
