Jim Shelton is the US Department of Education's deputy secretary, in charge of a wide range of administrative, policy, and program duties. He was formerly the director of the Office of Innovation and Improvement, where he oversaw most of the department's competitive initiatives, including i3 and Promise Neighborhoods.

Shelton has served as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's education program director, the NewSchools Venture Fund's East Coast head, and the co-founder of the school management firm LearnNow. Knowledge Universe Inc. developed, bought, and ran education-related businesses, and he was senior management in McKinsey & Company's Atlanta office.
