Jim Nelson Biography

Jim was promoted to the position after Art Cooper retired. Nelson entered the magazine as a managing editor in 1997 and was promoted to co-executive editor in 2002. He collaborated with collaborators such as Charles Bowden, Michael Paterniti, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Guy Lawson all through his time at the magazine. The American Society of Magazine Publishers named 2 pieces Nelson modified by Gilbert as well as Paterniti finalists for National Magazine Awards in 2003; a particular aspect Nelson edited, The Male Species, was also selected for a National Magazine Prize in the Single-Topic Issue group. His work for GQ was included in The Best American Sports Writing 2001. Nelson and GQ were honored with a National Magazine Prize for Photography in 2009, who were finalists in a magazine record 7 other categories. Nelson and GQ were named finalists for the 2008 National Magazine Award for General Excellence (500,000 to 1,000,000 circulation), as well as Feature Writing, Reviews and Condemnation, Layout, and Photography. Nelson and GQ were nominees for National Magazine Prizes in the classifications of General Excellence, Feature Writing, Evaluations and Condemnation, and Design in 2007. Nelson and GQ were National Magazine Award finalists in the categories of Recreational Interests, Feature Writing, Resume Writing, Evaluations, and Condemnation, and Design in 2006. In addition, the magazine was a National Magazine Prize nominee in the classes of Feature Writing and Evaluations and Condemnation in 2005. Nelson worked as an editor at Harper's before actually joining GQ, where he was in charge of the Readings category. His work has also popped up in The New York Times Magazine, and Food & Wine, and Gourmet. Nelson earned a Bachelor's degree in American Studies from the University of Notre Dame.
