Jim was promoted to the position after Art Cooper retired. Nelson entered the magazine as a managing editor in 1997 and was promoted to co-executive editor in 2002. He collaborated with collaborators such as Charles Bowden, Michael Paterniti, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Guy Lawson all through his time at the magazine.
The American Society of Magazine Publishers named 2 pieces Nelson modified by Gilbert as well as Paterniti finalists for National Magazine Awards in 2003; a particular aspect Nelson edited, The Male Species, was also selected for a National Magazine Prize in the Single-Topic Issue group. His work for GQ was included in The Best American Sports Writing 2001.
