Jim McGreevey Biography

He obtained a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1981 and a master's degree in teaching from Harvard University in 1982. He attended The Catholic University of America before graduating from Columbia University in 1978. From 1990 to 1992, McGreevey served in the New Jersey General Assembly before becoming Mayor of Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. In 1995 and 1999, he was re-elected, and mayor. In 1993, he was elected to the New Jersey Senate and served as mayor during his four-year Senate tenure. He initially campaigned for governor in 1997 but was narrowly defeated by incumbent Republican Christine Todd Whitman (47 percent-46 percent), with Libertarian candidate Murray Sabrin receiving slightly more than 5% of the vote. McGreevey campaigned for governor again in 2001 and was elected. In that contest, his Republican opponent was Bret Schundler, who entered the race when Donald DiFrancesco pulled out due to corruption charges.
