He obtained a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1981 and a master's degree in teaching from Harvard University in 1982. He attended The Catholic University of America before graduating from Columbia University in 1978. From 1990 to 1992, McGreevey served in the New Jersey General Assembly before becoming Mayor of Woodbridge Township, New Jersey.
In 1995 and 1999, he was re-elected, and mayor. In 1993, he was elected to the New Jersey Senate and served as mayor during his four-year Senate tenure.
