Jim Hickman Biography

Jim Hickman, a senior executive with more than twenty years of expertise in community-based health and philanthropy, joined the Center for Youth Wellness (CYW) as a temporary Chief Executive Officer in January 2019. His appointment comes at a critical time for CYW, as the group works to achieve universal ACEs screening in California. Hickman's work on toxic stress stems from his years of combating poverty's systematic origins, as well as his quest to comprehend his own personal trauma. His leadership at CYW exemplifies his continuous dedication to improving the health of marginalized populations, which are disproportionately impacted by toxic stress. Hickman co-founded Hickman Strategies to assist entrepreneurs to identify innovative methods to offer health care to different groups before coming to CYW. Hickman was most recently the President and CEO of Sutter Health Better Health East Bay (BHEB), a Sutter Health charitable organization that employed a data-driven approach to tackle healthcare challenges for the underprivileged and those who require complicated care in the community. Hickman managed strategic communications and advocacy campaigns for PATH Drug Development, California's biggest Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation global health recipient, before joining Better Health East Bay. During the Clinton administration, Hickman worked for the White House Working Group on Welfare Reform and the US Department of Health and Human Services. Hickman graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a BA in Political Science and Business Economics and an MBA from Santa Clara University. He holds degrees from Leadership San Francisco and the Stanford Graduate School of Business and School of Medicine's Innovative Health Care Leader Program. Jim Hickman, his wife, three children, and their dog, Bowie, reside in the East Bay.
