In 1956, Jhoon Rhee made his first trip to the United States. He was in officer training for the South Korean military at the time. He returned to the United States after completing his military duty in South Korea to study engineering at the University of Texas in Austin.
It was here that he became the first teacher in the United States to teach Taekwondo to American students. Tang Soo Do was the name he gave to what he was teaching at the time (tangsudo).
