Jessica Lynch is a former U.S. Army private, teacher, actress, and author who became internationally known during the 2003 Iraq War. A 19-year-old supply clerk with the 507th Maintenance Company, she was captured after her convoy was ambushed near Nasiriyah on March 23, 2003. Eleven soldiers died, including her best friend, Lori Piestewa.
Lynch suffered severe injuries and was held for nine days in an Iraqi hospital. U.S. Special Forces rescued her on April 1 in a filmed nighttime raid. Honorably discharged, she co-wrote the 2003 bestseller “I Am a Soldier, Too”, inspired an NBC movie, and earned a teaching degree.
