Jessica Buchanan was born in Portland, Oregon, but spent her childhood in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area. Buchanan came to the Philadelphia region in 2003 to obtain a degree in education, and during the summers she began teaching and volunteering in Honduras, South Sudan, and Rwanda.

She landed a student teaching job at The Rosslyn Academy, an international school in Nairobi, Kenya, and was given a full-time teaching position there, which she gladly accepted. She then relocated to Hargeisa, Somaliland, where she was hired as an education adviser for the Danish Demining Group, the Danish Refugee Council's mine action section.
