Jessica Buchanan & Erik Landemalm Biography

Jessica Buchanan was born in Portland, Oregon, but spent her childhood in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area. Buchanan came to the Philadelphia region in 2003 to obtain a degree in education, and during the summers she began teaching and volunteering in Honduras, South Sudan, and Rwanda. She landed a student teaching job at The Rosslyn Academy, an international school in Nairobi, Kenya, and was given a full-time teaching position there, which she gladly accepted. She then relocated to Hargeisa, Somaliland, where she was hired as an education adviser for the Danish Demining Group, the Danish Refugee Council's mine action section. Erik Landemalm was born outside of Stockholm, Sweden, and served in the Swedish Navy as a Conscript Sergeant in a special unit. He studied at the University of Rebro in Sweden and Newcastle University in Australia. Landemalm came to Somalia in early 2006 to lead a program working on jail reforms and setting up Human Rights standards for the justice sector in the semi-autonomous territory of Puntland, after previously working on Somalia problems for different Swedish government agencies. While working in Somalia, he also worked with the Swedish NGO Diakonia on initiatives in Zimbabwe and Kenya. Landemalm began administering initiatives for AWEPA, a European Parliamentary organization, in 2008, with the goal of assisting legislative institutions in Somalia, Puntland, and the unrecognized self-declared state of Somaliland in building capacity and infrastructure. In June 2011, the President of Somaliland, on behalf of their Parliament, presented his initiative with a certificate of recognition for its achievements in Somaliland. Landemalm and Buchanan have moved to the United States and are now based in Alexandria, Virginia, where they continue their humanitarian work to improve the lives of those in need.
