I am the Cofounder of Orion, a San Francisco-based design-oriented wearable communications business with an incredible staff. Before that, I started Chef, served as CEO for the first three years, then as Chief Community Officer, and now as an adviser. I was the founder of the Velocity Web Performance and Operations Conference, the editor of the Web Operations book, and a contributor to the O'Reilly Radar blog. These efforts culminated in what is now known as the DevOps movement. Prior to joining O'Reilly, I spent 5 years as Amazon.com's "Master of Disaster," where I was in charge of Website Availability for all Amazon-branded websites. I developed the GameDay Program, which has been extensively adopted by a number of other prominent websites. Amazon's expertise, experiences, and chances to make significant improvements shaped the direction and trajectory of my career. I am a volunteer firefighter and emergency manager who headed a task group after Hurricane Katrina. My experiences in the fire department have had a significant impact on my job in technology, and I aim to condense my expertise from both areas and apply it in the service of both.
