Jesse James Leija began his professional boxing career on October 2, 1988, in his hometown of San Antonio, when he knocked out Oscar Davis in the first round. On January 1, 1989, he won a four-round decision against Joe Mitchell at the Trump Plaza hotel in New Jersey. This was Leija's first time performing outside of Texas.
On April 10, Leija defeated potential Shane Mosley contender Manuel Gomez by decision in four rounds in San Antonio.
