He was reared in Manhattan alongside his younger brother Charlie O'Connell, the son of an immigrant Irish father and a US-born mother. He is most recognized for his portrayal as Quinn Mallory in the TV series Sliders and as the obese child from Stand By Me. O'Connell has been performing since he was a child.
He did commercial work for Duncan Hines cookies as a kid. He won his first feature leading role in Rob Reiner's Stand By Me shortly after, at the age of eleven. He appeared in the television series My Secret Identity as a teenager and attended Manhattan's Professional Children's School.
