Jerry Craft Biography

Jerry Craft is an American cartoonist, illustrator, and author known for his graphic novels and children’s books that explore African American experiences, identity, and resilience. His most acclaimed work, “New Kid” (2019), a middle-grade graphic novel about a Black student navigating a predominantly white private school, won the 2020 Newbery Medal, the Coretta Scott King Author Award, and was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize. Its sequel, “Class Act” (2020), and the companion novel “School Trip” (2023) further explore themes of friendship and cultural identity. Craft’s earlier works include “Mama’s Boyz”, a syndicated comic strip, and illustrations for books like “The Zero Degree Zombie Zone” (2014). A graduate of the School of Visual Arts, he co-founded the Black Comic Book Festival at the Schomburg Center.
