Brown’s work explores themes of identity, race, sexuality, family, and violence.

He invented the "duplex," a poetic form combining elements of the sonnet, ghazal, and blues, featured in “The Tradition”. His earlier books, “Please" (2008) and “The New Testament” (2014), won the American Book Award and Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, respectively.
