He worked as the deputy domestic policy adviser to President Bill Clinton and as the policy director for Howard Dean's presidential campaign in 2004.
While residing in Israel in the late 1990s, Ben-Ami worked as the communications director for the New Israel Fund and founded the Israeli business Ben-Or Communications. He previously worked in New York City administration for over a decade.
