Jennifer Serravallo Biography

Jennifer Serravallo is a literacy consultant and novelist. Teaching Reading in Small Groups; Conferring with Readers; and The Literacy Teacher's Playbook, Grades K–2 and Grades 3–6; The Writing Strategies Book; and On-Demand Course Teaching Reading in Small Groups: Matching Methods to Purposes are among her many books. Serravallo began her career in education as a teacher in New York City's Title I schools before joining Columbia University's Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. She has spent over a decade working with teachers across the country to implement exceptional literacy instruction through reading and writing workshops, where students are joyfully engaged and instruction is meaningfully individualized to students' goals, first Through TCRWP and now as an independent consultant. I also wrote the REVERE award-winning Independent Reading Assessment: Nonfiction (Scholastic, 2012) and the AEP award-winning Independent Reading Assessment: Fiction (Scholastic, 2012). (Scholastic, 2013) For chapter book readers, these are the first and only assessments of whole-book comprehension (F&P levels J-W). She also contributes to Heinemann's groundbreaking online Digital Campus, where she has a self-paced course titled Teaching Reading in Small Groups that includes dozens of videos of her working with students individually and in small groups, as well as plenty of opportunities to reflect and interact with other members of the online community. Serravallo received her BA from Vassar College and her MA from Teachers College, where she also taught graduate and undergraduate courses on urban education policy and children's books.
