Jennifer Finney Boylan is an author, memoirist, transgender activist, and professor. She serves as the inaugural Anna Quindlen Writer-in-Residence at Barnard College of Columbia University and became president of PEN America in December 2023. Boylan graduated from Wesleyan University and earned a master’s from Johns Hopkins. She taught at Colby College for decades before joining Barnard. She transitioned in 2000 and published the bestselling memoir “She’s Not There: A Life in Two Genders” in 2003, the first by an openly transgender American, becoming a seminal work in trans literature. Boylan has written 19 books, including novels, short stories, and memoirs like “Good Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs” (2020). She co-authored the novel “Mad Honey” (2022) with Jodi Picoult. A former New York Times contributing opinion writer, she has appeared on Oprah and advocated for LGBTQ+ rights through GLAAD and other organizations.
